چکیده

We report on a case-series of four male patients, aimed at investigating the effect of interval training by means of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) on ambulation ability in spinal cord injury (SCI). Four male motor complete (ASIA-A) participants were enrolled in this study. They were trained to walk supported by FES using progressive interval exercise training on a motorized treadmill. We used distance walked to muscle fatigue during continuous treadmill ambulation as the primary outcome measure. Despite varied responses, all subjects increased their ambulation capacity. We conclude that FES-supported interval training offers a useful and effective strategy for strength-endurance improvement in the large muscle groups of the lower limb in motor complete SCI. We believe that this training protocol offers a viable alternative to that of continuous walking training in people with SCI using FES to aid ambulation.

Comparison of strategies and performance of functional electrical stimulation cycling in spinal cord injury pilots for competition in the first ever CYBATHLON

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) can elicit muscular contraction and restore motor function in paralyzed limbs. FES is a rehabilitation technique applied to various sensorimotor deficiencies and in different functional situations, e.g. grasping, walking, standing, transfer, cycling and rowing. FES can be combined with mechanical devices. FES-assisted cycling is mainly used in clinical en...

Functional electrical stimulation cycling improves body composition, metabolic and neural factors in persons with spinal cord injury.

Persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) are at a heightened risk of developing type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The purpose of this investigation was to conduct an analysis of metabolic, body composition, and neurological factors before and after 10 weeks of functional electrical stimulation (FES) cycling in persons with SCI. Eighteen individuals with SCI received FES cycling 2-3 time...

Spinal cord control of movement: implications for locomotor rehabilitation following spinal cord injury.

In recent years, our understanding of the spinal cord's role in movement control has been greatly advanced. Research suggests that body weight support (BWS) walking and functional electrical stimulation (FES), techniques that are used by physical therapists, have potential to improve walking function in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI), perhaps long after the stage of spontaneous recov...

Recovery of assisted overground stepping in a patient with chronic motor complete spinal cord injury: a case report.

BACKGROUND Clinical studies have shown that after incomplete spinal cord lesions at the thoracic level, patients can develop functional gait patterns through gait training. To date, however, training has been ineffective in producing gait in patients with clinically motor complete spinal cord lesions. OBJECTIVE Here we report a patient with chronic motor complete spinal cord injury who regain...

Performance improvement of walker-assisted FES-supported paraplegic walking

In this paper we present a method to generate optimal stimulation pattern for walker-assisted paraplegic walking using FES systems. To determine the stimulation patterns, a musculoskeletal model of walker-assisted FES-supported paraplegic walking is introduced. The optimal stimulation patterns are determined through minimizing the trajectory tracking error of the lower body and mechanical energ...
